ABOUT / SEATTLE, WA

An AI engineer who builds the whole thing.

BILL WHITE / FIELD CONDITIONS

I'm Bill, an AI engineer and maker based in Seattle. I build interactive data models, prototype physical products with 3D printing and laser cutting, design connected devices down to the firmware, and wire it all together with automation that runs on its own. The AI is inside each of those, not bolted on afterward.

I'm driven by curiosity and the satisfaction of making things that work, whether that's a real-time energy model, a custom infinity mirror, or an automation pipeline that keeps everything running while I sleep. The common thread is taking something complex and making it legible.

The projects I'm proudest of needed all of those at once, and that is where I do my best work.

BEFORE THIS

Where the judgment came from

  • 2026 TO PRESENT

    Layered Logic LLC, founder

Independent AI engineering and product work: the energy model, Admin OS, and the Reflections mirrors, all built end to end.

  • 2023 TO 2024

    NosTerra Ventures, entrepreneur in residence

Climate and energy modeling for a venture firm: marine energy viability, policy scenarios, and the first version of the energy Sankey.

  • 2017 TO 2023

    Microsoft, data scientist on Surface

Six years turning hardware telemetry into decisions: thermal limits and the KPIs to track them, failure-rate forecasting across teams, and an A/B testing tool the devices org ran on.

Layered Logic

My independent practice runs as Layered Logic LLC. The name is literal: everything I make is built in layers. Layers of 3D printing, layers of the design process, layers of data and analysis. The consulting work on this site and a small line of made-to-order light objects (starting with the infinity mirror) both live under it.

Even the logo works that way. It's a generative sketch, and this one is live: two nested Ls that read your cursor like a level meter.

EDUCATION

Where the training came from

  • 2024 TO PRESENT

    University of Washington

Master of Science in Human-Centered Design & Engineering, in progress. Focused on data and behavioral change.

  • 2012 TO 2017

    Northwestern University

Bachelor of Science. Double major in Manufacturing & Design Engineering, and Industrial Engineering and Managerial Sciences.

OFF THE CLOCK

Also true

  • ROAD

    I race bikes

2022 Washington Cat 3 road race champion, Unbound 100 finisher, and the bike under me is one I built.

  • TABLE

    I run a D&D campaign

Multi-year homebrew world, and a sketch-to-battle-map pipeline I built because the maps were taking longer than the sessions.

  • SHOP

    I teach and fix things

Wrote and taught the advanced 3D printing course at Seattle Makers and kept their printers running. Refurbished donated bikes at The Bikery so they could go back out on the road.
